Spring Mesh and Skin Posted April 3, 2007

The "flowers" are referring to the hair decoration depicted at the back of the head, as seen in the lower image on the right, and again, they're associated with the body, not the head.  Our only reference to Vána tells us that she is the younger sister of Yavanna and the spouse of Oromë, loves birds and flowers, and is called "the Ever-Young."  Since all of the Ainur are immortal and ageless, I couldn't think that Tolkien meant she looked like a child, but rather that she was the essence of the freshness of renewal as in the spring.  Given that many of the other Valier were somehow dark or distinctly unpastel (unless the pastel be gray), I decided to make Vána fair-haired, fresh-skinned, and dressed in the pastel pink and white of spring.  That this contrasted very nicely with her more woodsy husband was definitely a plus.

*As with the other characters I've been revising, I've had some quibbles with Vána from the first. Her dress and body mesh were fine; it was the skin for her head that I didn't quite like. Although the eyes were all right, the nose was too broad and the mouth too pinched to suit my image of her. I also had some issue with the highlights of her hair, and wanted to at least attempt to correct these issues. The head mesh is the same as the old, as is the body and body skin; only the skin for the head has changed. I numbered it to overwrite the old skin; if you prefer that version, I renamed it to work with the same mesh, and it's still available on the lower right of this page.

This extra headshot is to show greater detail of the collar on Vána's fall gown. It was intended to look like a ruff of peacock feathers, appropriate, I felt, since Vána loved birds. Perhaps the voice of the peacock isn't as beautiful as that of the nightingale, but its plumage is definitely showy.
