New Version Posted June 30, 2005* no crown or staff Seasonal Variations below Finally, Dementia finished the project she started months ago with Ulmo. Since Ulmo generally prefers not to adopt a physical body (but takes on one of great majesty when he does do so), coming up with something appropriate that didn't fall back on all of the "sea-god" cliches was something of a chore. For one thing, every artistic interpretation I've seen of Ulmo that didn't venture into the abstract generally portrayed him as Neptune, complete with the Neptunian trident. Okay, taking inspiration from sea-creatures for his clothing was perfectly reasonable, but the trident? I don't seem to recall Tolkien ever saying he used that particular weapon (though I might be wrong). In any case, I decided to skip that and instead gave him a sort of spear/staff to hang onto as a nice-looking prop. His clothing uses thefish-scale motif because I thought it was appropriate; the "crown" took its inspiration from a type of seashell called the murex ramosus. Although I have versions with and without the crown, I didn't bother to make a version without the crown and with the spear, since I figured if he was going through the effort to look impressive and carry the spear, he'd pull out all the stops with the rest of his outfit.
*The new version was made for three reasons: to unify all the body meshes into one, to spruce up the outfit, and to give the head longer "stay-put" hair. Although this makes it poke through the collar of the main outfit (rather artistically, I think), you can see the full proper effect on the back view of the fall outfit below. |
Seasonal Variations Summer (left), Fall (right). Summer is based on my mesh for Young Cirdan (b0k7mafit), fall on my mesh for Celeborn (b3q9mafit). Both are included in the download.
