Tulkas Astaldo Image

The fight with the mesh for Tulkas is finally over, and since it resolved itself so nicely, there had to be some problem with the character, which was his head skin.  We aren't given much in the way of descriptions of the common fanar of the Valar, but Tulkas, the Champion of the Valar and spouse of Nessa, is one of the exceptions.  His hair and beard were golden (we get both color and the fact that he had a beard!) and his skin was ruddy.  Nice to have that much of a description, but just how golden, and how ruddy?  It took many tests to get it in a state that I liked, something more than just ordinary blond but not excessively brassy.  Since his weapons were his hands and he loved running and wrestling, it was easy to assume he would be a strong guy, and needed an appropriate body mesh.  I opted for greens and browns because I felt they complemented his hair and skin tone better than blues and reds.

He might look a little bit familiar, since to get the appearance I wanted, his hair mesh was based on Manwë's and his body mesh on Aulë's, but they are most definitely not the same.  The gauntlets, greaves, and belt of Tulkas' outfit are all integrated into the same mesh -- hallelujah, I've finally gotten the hang of texture mapping!  Too bad it waited until I was almost finished with the Valar, but then, there are all the Maiar to do, and the Eldar, and maybe some new outfits for Manwë and Varda....
