Olwë
Brother of Elwë, Father of Eärwen, King of the Teleri

Since my Muse appears to be determined to work backwards, it came as no surprise to me that her next inspiration was to work on the three Elves who led their kindred from Middle-earth to Valinor during the Great Crossing. And keeping with that backward motion, it was also no surprise that the one she finished first was the leader of the group that went last, Olwë of the Teleri. I wasn't able to find a description of Olwë, but I figured it wasn't illogical that he might have silver hair like his brother Elwë, their kinsman Nöwë (aka Círdan), and another kinsman, Celeborn. It seems as if Tolkien had it in mind that the dominant hair color of the Noldor was dark, the Vanyar golden, and the Teleri silver. I wouldn't be too surprised to find substantiation for this somewhere in his writings, but at the moment, I can't recall where precisely to look.

Anyway, in creating the meshes and skins for Olwë, I tried to stick with the "sea" theme while keeping away from the ubiquitous wave and water patterns I'd used in some of the other sea-elves and water-related Ainur. The shell design I used in the belt clasp and demi-circlet is gold rather than silver or a pastel shell color because it's more prominent against Olwë's silver hair and pale clothing. The silver filagree design in the pendant and at the center of the circlet was, I felt, sufficiently reminiscent of swirling waves. The cloth texture for his robe is a design of mother-of-pearl mosaic inlay, which I felt gave a good iridescent appearance and depth, thereby avoiding the headaches that often come with trying to make white clothing have depth and interest. The upper part of the necklace is the same design as the back of Eärwen's headpiece, and both are based on the design of Uinen's necklace. This was deliberate, since Uinen was beloved of the Teleri, and wept for those in Aman who were lost during the Kinslaying. There's a slight problem with a kink in the side braids of the head mesh; it's a joint assignment issue that I simply haven't been able to work out to my satisfaction. However, it seems to be more of an issue with static posed images; it's much less noticeable when the Sim is in motion. If I ever come up with a more satisfactory solution to the problem, I'll be sure to post it.
