Seasonal Variations Below
When I finally finished work on Ulmo, it occurred to me that I should really do Námo next, just to finish doing all eight of the Aratar, the Chiefs of the Valar. Since Námo is both the Doomsman of the Valar and the Keeper of Mandos, the Halls of Waiting for the spirits of the dead, it seemed just a tad cliche to depict him as robed entirely in black, carrying the scythe, etcetera. However, it also seemed absurd to go the opposite route and make him too brightly colored (at least for European-rooted mythological sensibilities). So since I had already made his sister Nienna and depicted her as dark-haired, I felt justified in keeping with the dark-haired theme (runs in the "family," after all). Rather than make his clothing entirely black, I decided to use that for the accent color and make the primary base color purple (another hue associated with mourning in Western cultures, but not as grim as black).
*The revisions were intended to address a number of flaws that had always troubled me with the original meshes and skins: lack of texture and clarity in the hair, excessively angular lines in parts of the body, poor definition in the skins. Because the general images of the original were in keeping with my visions of the character, I tried to resolve these issues without making too many excessive changes. The biggest changes wound up being the front yoke of the robe and the sleeve cuffs, which refused to texture map properly, or would show up poorly against other now clearer textures. Not too disappointing, I hope.
