Gildor's part in LotR is small, but pivotal; it was the arrival of he and his group travelling to the Grey Havens that ultimately drove away the Black Rider pursuing Frodo, Sam, and Pippin on their first night after leaving Bag End. His group also gave them shelter for the night (so to speak) and were the first Elves Sam ever saw (much to his delight). He introduced himself as "Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finrod," which implies that he was somehow connected to Finrod Felagund, the founder and king of Nargothrond. According to scholars, the name "Inglorion" indicates that he is the son of Finrod (Inglor being another name of his), although it was specifically stated that Finrod had no wife or children. He may have been an adopted or foster son, or possibly was more distant kin or was somehow beholden to Finrod and thus served his house. Other than the help and advice he gave to Frodo on his way out of the Shire, that's all we see of him (although he does have one of the more memorable lines in LotR, "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger").

Physically speaking, we don't really know anything about him; I scoured the few pages in which he appeared and came across no description of him, so I went with my gut on this one. Gildor is Noldorin, since he referred to himself and his group as "Exiles," and as they appeared to be wanderers at home in the woodlands, I decided to give him woodsy garb fitting with a folk who like to go about without drawing too much attention. If he is indeed related to Finrod, then it would be possible for him to have lighter hair than is typical for the largely dark-haired Noldor. I tried him out as a blond, similar in shade to Finrod himself, and decided I didn't really like it, so I darkened his hair to a brown-blond. The device used as a clasp and as a belt "buckle" in the three variations is the same design I used on Finrod, to keep with the "house" theme.
