Finwë
Father of Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin, King of the Noldor in Aman

In designing Finwë, I found myself confronted by a number of puzzles. He was the first King of the Noldor, the ambassador who went to Valinor with Ingwë and Elwë, to decide if their peoples should leave Middle-earth for the West. He was among the oldest of the Elves -- but he also was the first to die in Valinor, killed by Melkor when he went to steal the Silmarils after he poisoned the Two Trees. So by the time he died, Finwë wouldn't have been all that old for an Elf. And moreover, he died before the making of the Sun and Moon, so I chose a background picture that could more or less be taken for the mingling of the lights of the Trees.
When it came to designing his clothing and crown, I decided upon something dignified, for Finwë had always struck me that way (from the comparative little we know of him, that is). The device on his collar and belt is drawn after an emblem Tolkien himself made for Finwë. The golden "sunburst" is echoed in the devices of some of his descendants, which I find a bit surprising, given that A). the Sun hadn't risen before Finwë died, and B). silver seems to be the dominant metal preferred in the regalia of his offspring. I also figured that Fëanor likely got his dark hair from his father (since so many of the Noldor appear to be dark haired, and I don't believe we're ever told the kindred of Fëanor's mother, Míriel). The circlet is deliberately simpler than some of those I designed for Finwë's descendants, since he reigned over the Noldor in their early years, even before Fëanor perfected the jewel-craft for which he was renowned.
There's one other small detail to point out: the braids at the sides of Finwë's head. They're drawn from the temples into the clasp at the back of the head, and are not as prominent as most of the other braids I've used for Elven men. They can be seen most clearly in the picture at the left.
