Elrond Peredhil
as portrayed by Hugo Weaving
Once again, I had not expected this to be the next Sim I completed (poor Yavanna, languishing in Sim limbo until my Muse is kind enough to think of her). As a rule, I do not do requests (except for my family and friends), but in this case, a recent suggestion by a visitor to the site happened to coincide with what I had already had in mind to do. There were three problems I encountered:
1. Choosing a particular outfit of the many he had for the clothing skin. I settled on this one because it promised to be the simplest to render -- but I should have known better. The white passementerie was drawn entirely freehand, and although the designs themselves weren't exceptionally difficult, determining the proper placement of the figures on the sleeves with this particular body mesh proved to be extraordinarily difficult.
2. Finding a suitable photograph to use as the basis for his face. In the search, I found that while there are many pictures of Hugo Weaving as Elrond, many of those you can find on the internet or in magazines are variations of the same six or seven images. Moreover, in most of them, the angle of the shot is unsuitable, the shadows and/or coloring are abysmal, and he's either scowling, has his mouth open, or both. It seems, in fact, that Mr. Weaving's "resting" expression is something of a scowl, because of prominent lines around his mouth and eyes and because of the set of his eyes and the subsequent appearance of his eyebrows. Once I found a reasonably appropriate photograph, I was able to redraw certain aspects of the face to remove the "perma-scowl," but then found that the head mesh I had made, which used a standard proportion to the male Sim jaw and chin, needed to be narrowed and slightly lengthened to provide a proper appearance for Elrond.
3. The circlet. Having made a few of these things for other Sim LotR characters, I was beginning to get the hang of it, but I wanted this to look unique, not merely like a re-use of the others. It took rather a bit of work, but I'm pleased with the results.
Elrond is still settling into my Sim neighborhood, "Rivendell" being located on what seems to be the largest lot near the center: the former location of the now-demolished "Kennel Club" that was a community lot in the original installation of Unleashed.
