Beren, Son of Barahir
Husband of Lúthien Tinúviel

After finishing the Sim for Elwing, I decided to work on completing the "fragmented" couples, and of course Beren was first to come to mind, since I had already finished Lúthien. From what we know of him -- that he had the courage to ask for Lúthien's hand, and then attempt to meet the demanded bride price by cutting a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth -- indicated that he was a person capable of facing many challenges, a worthy predecessor of the Rangers who would one day be his descendants. Beren always struck me as a rather "woodsy" character, and much of his story involves his dealings with evil in Middle-earth, so I decided to give him an outfit that was both a little practical and a little fancy. The colors and the leafy pattern on his tunic were chosen as a sort of "camouflage" effect that was still organic in nature, but the added touches of the dagged tunic hem and gilt buckle were intended to give him a little more "flash" than a common woodsman. The silver and black of the cloak was a deliberate echo of the silver and black of Gondor, which was ruled by Beren's distant descendants.

I had originally designed a head mesh with more of the hair pulled back, which seemed eminently more practical for a man of action, but when the skin was finished, I found that he simply looked better with more hair visible around his face. As a compromise, I made the hair partially pulled back, a single short braid held by a gold clasp. Since I've been having a heck of a time coming up with a Sim version of Viggo Mortenson's Aragorn (probably due, alas, to my extreme disappointment with the last movie), I've found that in the game, the Beren head skin works rather well as an Aragorn. Suitable, since they were related.
