Alatar
Servant of Oromë, Istar Morinehtar, one of the Blue Wizards

In The Lord of the Rings, the only thing we know about the two Blue Wizards (or Ithryn Luin) is that they went into the East "and do not come into these tales." In Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle-earth Books, Tolkien said a bit more -- though not a lot more, and some of it was inconsistent. It at least seems clear that their names as Maiar were Alatar and Pallando, and that Alatar served the Vala Oromë. Since they always seemed to be mentioned as "Alatar and Pallando," in that order, when Tolkien gave them other names, I presumed that the one that belonged to Alatar was the one that was listed first -- Morinehtar, Darkness-slayer. Also, since Alatar was one of the first two Istari to volunteer for the job and took Pallando with him as a friend, the fact that the other name meant "East-helper" indicated to me that it referred to Pallando.

So much for the history lesson! Keeping in mind that Alatar was a Blue Wizard and that he also served Oromë -- who was surnamed Aldaron, lover of trees, for his great fondness for them -- I tried to work both elements into his garb, using golden leaf patterns around the neckline and in his staff; the buckle of his belt and clasp of his cloak is a golden tree with spreading branches and a single blue stone set among the roots. The golden leaf dangling from the belt is purely for show -- or might it be a cleverly constructed pouch for secret items? His head is a modified version of Aulë's, with a broader tail at the back, thin braids at the front sides, and a longer, narrower chin. I had attempted to give him a long narrow beard, but alas, nothing I did with it could make it look right; it either poked through his chest and shoulders with the slightest movement of the head, or remained so stuck in place, it looked ludicrous.
